‘I intend to use the map next term with the Primary Education trainees to promote interactive learning and teaching in geography and history at KS2. I hope the map will enable the trainees to see how one can promote cross-curricular links and thematic approach in KS2. Opportunities will also be given for the trainees to plan and create teaching and learning activities for the map focusing on creativity and independent learning’

During this period of service there were many changes and innovations, and as part of professional development Ann was introduced to Ian Dawson’s principles of Active History and also undertook a Basic Skills Postgraduate Diploma Course. She attributes the concept of the giant floor maps to a combination of these two learning experiences.
Ann considers her purpose in education to be a facilitator of learning - particularly for more challenged pupils. Her work with the floor maps has yielded improvements in pupils’ knowledge and confidence - there is no pupil who cannot learn something from the imaginative use of this resource.
Having retired, Ann continues to pursue her interest in floor map education and is available to instruct and promote their usage across the educational spectrum. For schools wishing to have a “taste of the maps” Ann, together with a British Isles floor map, is available for inset presentation at schools within the UK.

The first 50 British Isles floor maps are available for schools in Wales from CAA Aberystwyth at an incredible £199.00 (plus VAT) - the cost of these maps has been subsidised by the Welsh Assembly Government.
