MaxiMap in action at Ysgol Brynsierfel School, Llanelli, March2010 - the British Isles.
Lee James (Deputy Head of Ysgol Brynsiefel) took the lesson for our video - this was his very first experience of using the resource and with vitually no time at all to prepare and with a class of children he’d never taught before the result was quite exceptional.
He commented: “I found the floor map an excellent teaching aid and I see how it can make the teacher's job much easier.
During the lesson, the children of 6 and 7 years old managed to concentrate continually for an hour - much more than would normally be expected of this age group.
Using the map will fit with and enhance our existing geography scheme of work - we had lessons planned based on football teams, first in Wales and then in throughout the UK, so the floor map will be an invaluable resource in many ways as the children respond to it so well”.
His coleague Sarah Williams who is the Geography & History co-ordinator said that the study of National Parks is part of their curriculum so they'll use the map to help the children study and compare the relative areas and geographical features of the parks. “In year 6 they are studying distances and route planning based on football teams throughout the UK, so we'll use the floor map first with measuring sticks to physically measure and calculate, and then they'll check their answers using MultiMap”.
She is also working on a geography quiz game using the floor map as a giant game board so they can regularly check the pupils' progress. We hope to update you soon on Sarah’s progress with the quiz game.
We spoke to some of the puplis in the video about two weeks later to see how much they’d retained of the experience.
Saskia Thomas said “I remember when we had to put the chain to follow the border lines” and Caitlin Thomas said that the best part was “when we had the flags with the names on and we were following each other around all the different countries”.
Here I am showing Georgia Barton
from Coleg Powys how the map
could be used to teach the weather
to our Welsh for Adults students.
