MaxiMap was the brainchild of Swansea school teacher Ann Jones.
Understanding of Ann’s history lessons was hampered by her pupils’ lack of the most basic geographical knowledge of the British Isles. Working in Cefn Hengoed Community School, Ann commissioned the first giant floor map in 2009. It was a huge success in her school – the floor map proved to have great cross-curricular appeal and was developed for a number of subject areas. Soon news spread and other schools asked if they could borrow Ann’s giant map.
MaxiMap was born !!
In 2010, MaxiMap entered the first Ordnance Survey GeoVation Challenge, held at the hallowed London premises of the Royal Geographical Society … and against stiff opposition MaxiMap won the competition !!! The award provided seed funding enabling the purchase of high quality satellite imagery for the World MaxiMap and for the launch of the products at the Geographical Association Annual Conference.

MaxiMaps encourage pupils to develop a bedrock of knowledge. Using the floor map, pupils interact using accessories and tasks to master information through “play”. This “play to learn” methodology is effective for all ages and abilities, and throughout the curriculum.
To date, over 100 schools, colleges and universities throughout the UK have taken the opportunity to benefit from this unique teaching resource. Organisations such as the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust use our giant floor maps in educational programs at their 9 centres throughout the UK and Ramblers Cymru purchased a Wales MaxiMap for events to coincide with the launch of the Wales Coastal Path. An engineering company in southern England purchased a world floor map to use at a conference of its world wide sales agents !!
INSETS: To maximise the value of the MaxiMap System within schools, inset training is available.
Each session is individually tailored to the needs of the school: full day, half day, twilight sessions and workshops. All necessary equipment and information will be provided. Instruction is available in English and Welsh.
